Russian cultural delegation arrives in North Korea to boost ties

Seoul, Mar 19 (EFE).- A Russian cultural delegation led by Moscow’s Vice Culture Minister Andrei Maluishev has arrived in Pyongyang to commemorate the 75th anniversary of bilateral agreements on economics and culture between both countries, state media reported Tuesday.

The delegation, which arrived on Monday, also includes the art troupe of the Maritime Territory Branch of the Mariinsky Theatre, North Korea state news agency KCNA said.

The delegation was received by North Korean Vice Culture Minister Pak Kyong-chol along with other officials at the airport.

In a separate article, the North Korean agency announced the arrival on Monday of another Russian delegation, led by Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of Russia’s far-eastern region of Primorsky Krai, bordering North Korea.

Some 300 workers of North Korean origin arrived in Russia by train in February, according to experts, an example of close cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow that could violate international resolutions.

In early February, a group of a 100 Russian tourists arrived in Pyongyang, the first foreign group to enter the country after it completely sealed its borders due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Russian embassy in the North Korean capital.

Russia and North Korea have been strengthening their ties since the summit in September between their leaders, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un respectively.

Pyongyang has opted to boost ties with Beijing and Moscow, which have vetoed new sanctions against it and seem to provide certain security guarantees to it in a global framework marked by wars in Israel and Ukraine and growing acrimony between autocracies and countries that are considered democratic.
