LaLiga president: Barça have to cut wages to keep Messi

Madrid, Jun 21 (EFE).- Barcelona will have to cut their players’ salaries to be able to keep Lionel Messi should he agree to renew his contract with the Catalan club, LaLiga president Javier Tebas said on Monday.

“Barcelona, with the wage bill they have today, are exceeding (the cap). In order for him to incorporate Messi, there will have to be reductions in player salaries,” Tebas said during the presentation of LaLiga’s Economic-Financial Report.

“They have to make a significant effort to reduce the current wage bill to incorporate these players. They are on their way to do it, they have told us about it and we are confident they will,” he continued.

He said Barcelona’s current spending limit of 347 million euros — revealed in January 2021 — would not be alter just yet.

“Barcelona, which is the world’s number one team in terms of business, what it needs to do is structure its debt. If they do it correctly, and yesterday they approved the restructure of 525 million euros, their situation will not be too complicated.” EFE
