Some 50,000 people march in Sydney to close WorldPride

Sydney, Australia, Mar 5 (EFE).- About 50,000 people marched Sunday through the streets of Sydney to show their support for the rights of the LGBT+ community at the closing of the world WorldPride 2023 festival, which was held in the Australian city.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who participated in the march, called it “a celebration of unity” and stressed that the passage over the Sydney Harbor Bridge symbolizes “the coming together of people” in an event that “unites to the Australian community and celebrates diversity,” state television ABC reported.

WorldPride2023 has hosted an intense program that started on Feb. 17, with concerts by various personalities and music stars, including pop icon Kylie Minogue.

WorldPride is an event created by InterPride, an international organization that coordinates Pride Day organizers in different cities, and has been held regularly since its first edition in 2000, when it took over the streets of Rome.

Since then WorldPride has taken place in Jerusalem (2006), London (2012), Toronto (2014), Madrid (2017), New York (2019), Copenhagen-Malmo (2021) and, in the future, it is planned in Washington (2025) and Amsterdam. EFE
