Ramos, Hazard back to group training in time for Atalanta clash

Madrid, Mar 10 (efe-epa).- Real Madrid got a welcome boost on Wednesday as captain and defender Sergio Ramos and Belgian forward Eden Hazard rejoined the team for a group training session after recovering from their respective injuries.

While they could still make the squad for Saturday’s La Liga clash against Elche, manager Zinedine Zidane’s main goal will be making sure both players are available for the Champions League last-16 second leg against Italian Serie A side Atalanta on Tuesday.

Real go into the match with the cushion of an away goal, having defeated Atalanta 0-1 in the first leg.

Sources inside the club told Efe that barring any setbacks, the pair will be called up, although they may not be fit enough to last the full 90 minutes.

Ramos underwent a successful left knee injury on 6 February, while three days earlier Hazard sustained yet another muscle injury. The Belgian’s time at the Bernabeu has been riddled with health issues since he moved from Chelsea in the summer of 2019.

Forward Mariano Díaz and right back Dan Carvajal remain sidelined, however, as the striker recovers from muscle injury sustained two days before the Atletico Madrid clash last weekend, while the Spaniard suffered right leg injury on 14 February.

Real Madrid will be hoping that Atletico Madrid stumble against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, the game the La Liga leaders have had in hand over the title-chasing pack.

The Merengue hold the third spot, five points off the pace, having snatched a point from the Madrid derby on Sunday. Barcelona are in second, three points behind Atletico having played a game more. EFE-EPA
