Swiatek extends winning streak to 33, into French Open semis

Sports Desk, Jun 1 (EFE).- Iga Swiatek on Wednesday beat Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-2 for her 33rd consecutive win to book a French Open semifinal spot for the second time.

In 89 minutes, top-seed Swiatek, who turned 21 yesterday, defeated the US player for the second time – following her Miami Open semis victory – in her impressive 33-match winning streak, which dates back to February.

The first couple of games went against the serve, but the Polish player earned two service breaks in the seventh and ninth games to take the first set overcoming a late resistance from Pegula.

Two service breaks paved the way for the 2020 French Open champion to advance to her second Grand Slam semifinal in a row, having reached the Australian Open last-4.

With the victory, broke a tie with Belgium’s Justine Henin for the third longest winning streak, just behind the Williams sisters; Serena (34) and Venus (35).

Next up for Swiatek will be Daria Kasatkina, who emerged victorious from an all-Russian clash at the expense of Veronika Kudermetova.

The 20th-seed prevailed over Kudermetova 6-4, 7-6 in two hours and eight minutes to make the semifinal of a major for the first time, after two quarterfinals appearances in Paris and Wimbledon in 2018. EFE
