EU preparing new sanctions against Russia: von der Leyen
Helsinki, Nov 24 (EFE).- The European Union is working “full speed” on a ninth package of sanctions against Moscow, Ursula von der Leyen said Thursday.
During a press conference held in Espoo, near Helsinki, the European Commission president accused Russia’s Vladimir Putin of terrorism and war crimes, saying Russian missile strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure were designed to “terrorize civilians.”
“The Ukrainian people, because of Putin’s barbaric terroristic attack on the country’s civil infrastructure, must face this upcoming winter with no electricity and in many places no running water,” said Von der Leyen.
“Because of him, babies, their parents, and grandparents are freezing in the dark. I strongly condemn these barbaric attacks. They are war crimes,” she added.
Von der Leyen said the EU would continue to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes” and that the future sanctions package was going “to hit Russia where it hurts.”
The Commission chief also expressed her confidence in the approval of a global price cap on Russian oil “soon.”
“We will not rest until Ukraine has prevailed over Putin and his unlawful and barbaric war.” EFE
