Real Madrid head coach Zidane tests positive for coronavirus

Madrid, Jan 22 (efe-epa).- Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane has tested positive for Covid-19, the club said on Friday.

“Our coach has tested positive for Covid-19,” a statement said in a statement on its official website.

The team was preparing for Saturday’s LaLiga trip to Alaves.

Zidane’s absence meant his assistant, David Bettoni, led Friday’s training and took over media appearance duties after the training session, where he said the head coach was feeling well after speaking to him in the morning.

Zidane, who tested negative earlier this month after spending several days in confinement because of a close contact with a confirmed case, led a session with his team on Thursday after their shock Copa del Rey defeat to Alcoyano.

Defender Nacho Fernandez had not travelled to that game after coming into contact with a confirmed Covid-19 infected person.

The news follows the announcement that Raul Gonzalez, former Real striker and the current coach of Real Madrid Castilla reserve team, had contracted the virus.

Other Madrid players, such as Militao, Casemiro and Eden Hazard have all previously caught Covid-19.

As well as Saturday’s match against Alaves in Vitoria, Zidane could miss Real Madrid hosting Levante on January 30, the team’s visit to Huesca on February 6, the home game against Getafe on February 9 and Valencia on February 14. EFE
