Real Madrid pound Sociedad 4-1

Sports Desk, Mar 5 (EFE).- Real Madrid overcame an early deficit Saturday to thrash Real Sociedad 4-1 and extend their lead atop LaLiga.

With 63 points, the Blancos are 8 ahead of second-place Sevilla, while Sociedad remain in sixth with 44 points.

Against the hosts’ high press, Sociedad looked for openings on the counter and their first foray of the night resulted in a goal, as David Silva drew a penalty from Casemiro and Mikel Oyarzabal converted to make it 0-1 in the 10th minute.

Real Madrid were still trailing with five minutes left in the first half Saturday when Eduardo Camavinga scored from 30 meters with a stupendous strike that electrified the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu.

By the time the teams went to the dressing rooms at the break, the home side led 2-1 thanks to a Luka Modric goal in the 43rd minute, seconds after Karim Benzema saw a goal disallowed for offside.

The French striker had another goal called back in the 70th minute, but finally got his reward in the 76th, scoring from the penalty spot after Vinicius Jr. was fouled. Marco Asensio added a fourth goal in the 79th minute.

Carlo Ancelotti could not have asked for a better performance as his men prepare to host Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, which the Parisians lead 1-0. EFE rmm/dr
