UAE approves Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine for minors aged 3-17 years old

Dubai, Aug 2 (EFE).- The United Arab Emirates on Monday announced that minors between three and 17 years old can receive the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine after its efficacy in that age group has been verified.

The decision is based on the results of “clinical studies and the rigorous assessment followed by the emergency use permit and the local assessment that complies with the approved regulations,” the Health Ministry tweeted.

Abu Dhabi’s health department concluded on Sunday that the Sinopharm vaccine is effective in reducing the infection rate and severity of symptoms among the target group, after a study involving 900 children.

The regulator of the healthcare sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, however, did not reveal the efficacy rate achieved.

Some 78.95% of the UAE population have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, while 70.57% have been administered the full course, according to the National Authority for Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management.

UAE was one of the first countries to launch an inoculation campaign, and has approved the use of the Sinopharm, Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Sputnik-V Covid-19 vaccines.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, UAE has reported a total of 682,377 Covid-19 cases and 1,951 deaths. EFE
