The Wider Angle Series, organized by the Memphis Public Library, is presenting the film La familia, by Venezuelan Director Gustavo Rondón Córdova, on Tuesday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m. The free screening – with subtitles in English – is taking place in Meeting Room A, at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38111).

The plot revolves around Andrés (Giovanni García), a father working multiple jobs who barely spends any time with his son, Pedro (Reggie Reyes), in a working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Caracas. Without a warm family environment, the 12-year-old child spends significant time with his friends in the street. Unfortunately, Pedro is involved in a crime incident and, fearing reprisal, his father takes him out of the neighborhood.

Father and son begin a tour throughout Caracas that will allow the boy to explore the city from unknown perspectives. At the same time, the journey moving away from the neighborhood generates a new bond between both characters, giving this uncommunicative family the opportunity to become closer.

La familia’s crude violence mixes drama, action and tragedy, offering a portrait of Venezuela’s harsh political, social, and economic conditions. In this sense, Rondón Córdova’s film illustrates the struggle of the basic unit of society, the family, to survive, stay together and seek a future despite adversity.
