ENGLISH:

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1651 – 1695), “the Tenth Mexican Muse”, is a prominent figure within Hispanic American literature. Born as a child prodigy, she learned to read and write at the age of 3. As a child, she asked her mother to dress her as a man so that she could study at the University in Mexico.

In her youth, she entered the colonial Viceroy’s court as a lady-in-waiting. Under the Vicereine’s protection, she was able to expand her knowledge and interest in the sciences and humanities. With the Viceroys’ support, Sor Juana developed her fondness for literature, wrote praised sonnets, poems and plays that gave her great fame and prestige. She was so intelligent, that a group of influential individuals evaluated her, being surprised with her erudition.
As a woman, she was not able to pursue a university education; consequently, Sor Juana entered the cloister, first as Carmelita and then in the order of St. Jerome. In the convent, she was allowed to study, write, hold meetings, and exchange knowledge with friends and visitors. At the end of her life, as a product of a theological controversy with the Bishop of Puebla, she abandoned her artistic vocation and retreated to the monastic life, to die of Typhus in 1695.
This contemplative film, directed by the Argentine director María Luisa Bemberg, focuses precisely on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’ (played by Assumpta Serna) struggle for defending her right to knowledge and creation. The film, based on Octavio Paz’ biography, explores elements of Baroque art (in the scenography), her relationship with the Vicereine, María Luisa Manrique de Lara and Gonzaga, and the persecution suffered by Sor Juana for devoting to literature and the sciences, instead of focusing on the spiritual path.
I, the Worst of All portrays how an exceptional woman can be cornered by a world that prevents her from being intelligent. Little by little, the protagonist is defeated for having challenged her secondary place in the society. Fortunately, in spite of this, her work has been able to overcome time.
