Flick confirmed as next German national team coach

Berlin, May 25 (EFE).- Coach Hansi Flick has signed a three-year contract to manage the German national team after Euro 2020, the German soccer federation announced on Tuesday.

As widely expected, Flick has been chosen to succeed Joachim Löw, with whom he worked as assistant coach between 2006 and 2014 before becoming the federation’s sports director.

After two years as a director at Hoffenheim, the 56-year-old joined Bayern Munich in 2019 as an assistant coach, but he replaced Niko Kovac mid-season after a disappointing run of results.

Flick managed to correct Bayern’s course, leading the German giants to a treble that was crowned with the Champions League title last season.

But after enduring a difficult relationship with some of Bayern’s directors, most notably former player and head of player recruitment Hasan Salihamidžic, Flick asked the club to terminate his contract.

“I’m really excited because of the class of players we have in Germany, especially the youngsters,” he said after signing the contract that runs until 2024.

“We’ve got every reason to be optimistic about future tournaments, including the home Euros in 2024,” he added.

“I’m also looking forward to implementing some of my ideas for the national team and the academy,” he said.

Flick also stressed that he is looking forward to working again with national team director Oliver Bierhoff, who said that Flick was the favorite candidate to succeed Low.

“I know and value Hansi Flick, both as a person and as a coach, due to our many successful years together with the national team,” he said. EFE
