Venezuelan opposition says barriers to registering new presidential candidate Corina Yoris

Caracas, Mar. 23 (EFE).- Venezuela’s main anti-Chávez coalition, the United Democratic Platform (PUD), denounced on Saturday that it has not been able to register its new candidate, Corina Yoris, who was chosen on Friday due to the disqualification of María Corina Machado from running.

The registration period for presidential candidates, which began on Thursday, ends on Monday, according to the electoral calendar.

“More than 54 hours have already passed since the beginning of the nomination period with no access to the (electoral) system to nominate Dr. Corina Yoris,” declared the opposition bloc on social networks.

Yoris, who has a degree in philosophy and literature and a doctorate in history and is a university professor, was elected unanimously within the PUD on Friday and has “all the support” of Machado, who nevertheless assured that she will continue to fight the disqualification that prevents her from running for public office until 2036.

Vente Venezuela (VV), the party led by Machado, stated that Yoris will be registered as a “unified representative” of the opposition for the presidential elections “while the illegal disqualification” of the former liberal deputy is resolved.

During the day, several politicians and parties that are part of this anti-Chávez coalition have rejected the alleged obstacles through messages published on social networks with the hashtag “Let Corina register.”

“I warn Venezuelans and the world of the maneuver that is underway to prevent the registration in the CNE (National Electoral Council) of the candidate for the total democratic unity of Venezuela, Corina Yoris,” Machado wrote on her social media.

And the party La Causa R posted that “(President Nicolás) Maduro and his accomplices want to impose the opposition candidate.”

Meanwhile, Venezuelan Maduro confirmed that he will seek a second consecutive re-election, although it is not yet known on what day he will go before the electoral council to formalize his aspiration, which has the support of numerous organizations. EFE
