Lightning blitzes Mid-South as night storm rolls through

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — Varios clientes de MLGW no tienen electricidad luego de que una fuerte línea de tormentas se extendiera por el Medio Sur el domingo por la noche.

En un momento dado, hasta 20.000 clientes usuarios se quedaron sin energía eléctrica. Ese número ha disminuido desde entonces.

Overton Square era parte de esa lista. Esa área se quedó sin energía y dejó una espeluznante oscuridad en el área normalmente concurrida los fines de semana.

Los restaurantes que tenían clientes cenando y bebiendo se oscurecieron por completo.

La tormenta fue rápida y feroz. En Highland Street y Summer Avenue, la calle estaba inundada. Algunos autos atravesaron el agua que, en algunos puntos, tenía dos pies de alto.

Afortunadamente, ningún automóvil se estancó en las aguas crecientes.

Sin embargo, los rayos causaron daño.

Los vecinos dijeron que un rayo golpeó una casa en la calle Gracewood y provocó un incendio. Los bomberos apagaron las llamas rápidamente, y no hubo informes de heridos.

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — A number of MLGW customers are without power after a strong line of storms rolled through the Mid-South on Sunday evening.

At one point, as many as 20,000 customers lost power. That number has since dwindled. Overton Square was part of that list. The power went out in that area and left an eerie darkness in the normally busy area on the weekends.

Businesses that had customers inside having dinner and drinks went completely dark.

The storm was quick and fierce. At Highland Street and Summer Avenue, the street was flooded. Some cars went right through the water that, in some spots, was two feet high.

Luckily, no cars stalled in the rising waters.

The lightning did cause some damage, however.

Neighbors said one lightning strike hit a house on Gracewood Street and caused a fire. Firefighters put out the flames quickly, and there weren’t any reports of injuries.

A tree split in two and fell on top of a home on Charleswood Avenue. Neighbors said the people who live there were inside the home when the tree fell, but no one was injured

Just last week. MLGW CEO J.T. Young told the city council that MLGW’s 40-year-old infrastructure is partly to blame for the outages across the city. He said if that infrastructure were upgraded, there wouldn’t be as many outages.

Young plans to be back before the city council in the fall with a dollar figure on what it will take to make those upgrades.
