Goewey@cancer.org.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — The American Cancer Society (ACS) invites all Mid-South residents to be part of their annual “Relay For Life of Memphis” event, which will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium & Fairgrounds (996 Early Maxwell Blvd. Memphis, TN). With your participation, you will be helping the regional organization to continue their mission of raising funds while building a greater awareness to fight cancer. Registration is now open.

Being a social movement, the Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer. Its mission is to bring communities together to free the world of the pain and suffering caused by cancer. The Relay For Life has nothing to do with 5k runs or walks; instead, it is like a family-friendly community block-party style event that unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have had cancer, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and take action for lifesaving change.

“Cancer has touched so many in our community,” said Whitney Goewey, Community Development Manager for the American Cancer Society. “By participating in Relay For Life, we can honor our cancer survivors, remember those we’ve lost to cancer, and fight back as a community to raise the funds necessary to support the life-saving mission of the American Cancer Society. In addition to our special ceremonies, our participants get to enjoy live entertainment by Cosmic Rooster & DJ Tim Bachus, Memphis Ninja Warrior Mini Olympics, silent auction, plenty of delicious food, 901 Cake Pull, team contests, fun games/activities for all ages, team fundraisers, and so much more!”

In addition to the Relay, the inaugural Relay Duo Dash will be kicking off at 5 p.m. This is a 4-mile, 2-person relay race hosted by Start2Finish.

A luminaria ceremony in memory of loved ones who have died to cancer will also take place at 7:00 p.m.

At each Relay For Life event, the people involved demonstrate their courage, enthusiasm, and strength. Together they confirm that cancer can be overcome.

Participants take turns walking or running around a track or route. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times and participates in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.

The proceeds allow the American Cancer Society to provide free information and support for people facing the disease, as well as education on how to reduce the risk of cancer or how to detect it early, when it is easier to treat, and how to get the funding for cancer research that will help protect future generations. The American Cancer Society currently funds over $5.4 million in Memphis-based cancer research grants at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

The Relay for Life event is completely free to the public; however, donations are accepted at any time.
