Myanmar central bank deputy governor shot at in her home
Bangkok, Apr 7 (EFE).- An unknown assailant shot at and injured the deputy governor of the Myanmar central bank at her home Thursday morning.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on Than Than Swe, whose health condition is unknown.
The Eleven Media news portal, citing an unnamed local administration official, said the assailant “knocked on the front door of her house (in Yangon) and shot her when she opened the door.”
She had returned from the capital Naypyidaw last night.
The junta that seized power in Myanmar in February 2021 appointed Than Than Swe as the vice governor of the central bank last year.
She was recently nominated as the leader of a board to supervise dollar and gold conversions.
Myanmar has been battling worsening social, political, and humanitarian crises since the military toppled the democratically elected government of the Noble laureate Aung San Suu Kyi-led National League of Democracy.
The coup ended the fledgling democracy in the Southeast Asian nation and sparked a wave of civilian protests across the country.
The military rulers have tried to curb the protests with alleged disproportionate use of power against peaceful demonstrators demanding the restoration of democracy and civilian rights.
The situation has exacerbated the armed conflict in the country.
On previous occasions, anti-junta armed groups have assassinated people related to the military regime.
At least 1,730 people have lost their lives due to the brutal repression by the authorities against dissent.
The United Nations has accused the Myanmar military of murdering, detaining, and torturing the civilian population.
The army justifies the coup by alleging fraud in the November 2020 general elections.
The junta has annulled the poll results after the National League of Democracy swept the election as it did in 2015.
International observers had endorsed the polls as fair. EFE
