Ammunition depot explodes in northern Crimea

Moscow, Aug 16 (EFE).- An ammunition depot in the northern part of the Crimean peninsula exploded on Tuesday, the Russian defense ministry said, claiming it was due to sabotage.

“On the morning of Aug. 16, as a result of sabotage, a military warehouse was damaged in the area of the settlement of Dzhankoi,” the ministry said.

The incident took place at 06:15 am (03:15 GMT) in a military unit next to the town of Maiskoye in the Russian-annexed peninsula.

So far, no victims have been reported in the incident that forced the evacuation of more than 3,000 people in Maiskoye.

The blast, however, caused damage to several civilian facilities, including an electrical substation, the railway, and several houses, according to the ministry’s statement.

The latest explosion comes a week after a series of explosions at a military airbase on the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014.

Ukraine, which denied that it had attacked the airbase, said that these explosions destroyed a dozen Russian warplanes.

Moscow, meanwhile, said the explosions at the airbase were due to an accidental fire. EFE
