Report Finds ICE Detention Center Is Using A Disinfectant Over 50 Times A Day
Inmigrantes en cárcel de ICE son fumigados con pesticida hasta 50 veces al día
Two advocacy organizations have filed a complaint alleging that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center is using a COVID-19 disinfectant on the facility over 50 times a day.
The report, drafted by Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice and Freedom for Immigrants, states employees at the Adelanto Detention Center in California are spraying HDQ Neutral — which manufacturer Spartan Chemical warns can be harmful as it can cause skin burns and serious eye damage when inhaled — in poorly ventilated areas filled with detainees.
The complaint filed on May 21 compiled a slew of interviews with inmates describing the poor conditions in the facility. According to multiple accounts in the complaint, guards have been spraying HDQ Neutral every 15 to 20 minutes all over communal areas with devastating consequences on those imprisoned.
“The guards have started spraying this chemical everywhere, all over everything, all the time. It causes a terrible reaction on our skin,” one inmate said. “When I blow my nose, blood comes out. They are treating us like animals. One person fainted and was taken out, I don’t know what happened to them. There is no fresh air.”
Another inmate said he started profusely bleeding after coming into contact with the bathroom, which an official sprayed with disinfectant. They said the official told them it was HDQ Neutral.
The Adelanto Detention Center falls under GEO management. This is not the first time a complaint has been launched against one of the companies facilities.
Throughout the course of the coronavirus pandemic, GEO facilities have been criticized for not taking the spread of the novel coronavirus seriously — leading to a massive number of COVID-19 cases among those imprisoned.

CALIFORNIA (Microsoft News) — Cuando el presidente Donald Trump sugirió de forma irresponsable inyectar desinfectante o aplicar blanqueador o cloro como tratamiento contra el coronavirus, hubo quienes se lo tomaron muy en serio, como los administradores de algunas de las cárceles para inmigrantes detenidos por la Oficina para el Control de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE).
Y es que inmigrantes recluidos en dos centros de detención de ICE han denunciado que todos los días son prácticamente fumigados con un desinfectante que les causa irritación de piel y ojos, sangrado de nariz, náuseas y dolores de cabeza.
Una de esas cárceles es la que se ubica en Adelanto, California, donde los testimonios recabados por las organizaciones Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice y Freedom for Immigrants señalan que la fumigación con químicos se realiza cada 15 o 30 minutos, hasta 50 veces al día.
Las organizaciones enviaron el pasado 21 de mayo una carta de denuncia al Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) y a GEO Group, la empresa privada que administra la cárcel, en la que señalan que los inmigrantes detenidos están siendo expuestos a peligrosos químicos.
El desinfectante que utilizan en esta cárcel para inmigrantes ha sido identificado como HDQ Neutral fabricado por la compañía de productos químicos Spartan Inc.
La Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA) clasifica el HDQ Neutral como un pesticida que causa daño irreversible a los ojos y quemaduras en la piel.
La EPA recalca que se trata de un químico altamente nocivo si se ingiere, inhala o absorbe por la piel, por lo que se debe evitar respirar el vapor que produce al ser rociado y prevenir el contacto con los ojos, la piel o la ropa.
