Garbiñe Muguruza on dreaming big, pressure and the plight of Peng Shuai

Madrid, Nov 30 (EFE).- Having ended the season on a high by becoming the first Spanish player to win the WTA Finals, two-time Grand Slam champion Garbiñe Muguruza tells Efe she is learning to handle the pressure that comes with chasing her dreams.

“Before, in fact, I never wanted to share my goals much just in case (…) now I am more open to honestly saying that I would like to win this or that tournament,” she said.

“They are goals that everyone dreams of. I love them and I put pressure on myself but I think that’s good. As long as you dream big it is good that you feel pressure,” she added.

With the WTA Finals in the bag, the 28-year-old is setting her sights on two majors that remain elusive.

She came within one set of winning the Australian Open in 2020, and has never made it beyond the fourth round at the US Open.

“It’s always something I’ve wanted. Especially when I played the final in Australia last year,” she said.

“Yes, I would love to complete a Career Grand Slam (…) any tennis player would, right?”

Muguruza said she was motivated for the year ahead.

“The season for a tennis player is long, but that doesn’t mean you regard it like a mountain,” she said.
