Former king Juan Carlos to return to Spain after 2 years

Sanxenxo, Spain, May 17 (EFE).- Spain’s former king Juan Carlos I will return to Spain this weekend nearly two years after leaving the country, the mayor of Sanxenxo, a town in the northern region of Galicia, confirmed Tuesday.

Juan Carlos will be in Sanxenxo to attend a sailing regatta, the town’s mayor, Telmo Martin, said.

The former king has been living in Abu Dhabi since August 2020, when he left Spain amid a series of scandals including alleged illegal credit card transactions and business dealings in Saudi Arabia.

The royal palace has not confirmed where and when Juan Carlos will be arriving and staying in Spain.

On March 2, Spain’s national prosecutor dropped two investigations into Juan Carlos’ business dealings.

The prosecutor said in a statement that it had not been able to find proof that the former king had received a 65 million euro ($72 million) commission from a Saudi rail contract. EFE
