Washington, Jun 11 (efe-epa).- The number of coronaviruses cases in the United States has surpassed two million, more than any other country in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University.

America is the current global epicenter of the outbreak and cases in the country represent more than 27 percent of those reported worldwide.

The second-worst hit nation is Brazil with 772,416 infections and 39,680 deaths, followed by Russia with 493,023 cases and 6,350 fatalities.

Despite rising infection rates in 20 states, restrictions imposed to help contain the spread of the contagion have continued to be relaxed.

New York State has been the worst affected region by the outbreak in the US with 380,156 confirmed cases and 30,542 deaths, a figure second only to the United Kingdom, Brazil and Italy.

In New York City alone, 21,960 people have died.

It is followed by neighboring New Jersey with 165,346 confirmed cases and 12,377 deaths, California, which has reported 139,715 infections and 4,854 fatalities, and Illinois with 129,837 positive test results and 6,095 deceased.

There have been 112,924 deaths reported, which has already exceeded the lowest level of the initial estimates of the White House, which projected between 100,000 and 240,000 fatalities in the west coast state from the virus.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an independent global research center at the University of Washington, has predicted that there will be more than 145,000 deaths in the country by the beginning of August.

The country has also been gripped by Black Lives Matter protests since the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on 25 May. EFE-EPA
