They Locate 359 Migrants in a Truck in Mexico

MEXICO (AP) — A group of 359 mostly Central American migrants have been located in the trailer of a truck traveling through southern Mexico, the government announced.

Federal immigration agents made the discovery during a routine inspection at a checkpoint on a highway in the southern state of Veracruz, which borders the Gulf of Mexico. Hearing voices coming from the back of the truck, the agents asked to open the doors of the trailer and found the hundreds of migrants crowded together.

In the vehicle were 294 Guatemalans, 38 Nicaraguans, 15 Salvadorans, 8 Hondurans and four Ecuadorians, the National Migration Institute said in a statement. The driver of the unit was arrested and made available to the Veracruz Attorney General’s Office.

Migrants often pay smugglers to take them in buses or trucks through Mexico to the US border. Such trips are often very dangerous, as smugglers often pack many people into cargo compartments.

From the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula, a caravan of some 600 migrants departed, the first of 2022, with the aim of reaching the United States. Upon arriving at the border with Guatemala, a part of the caravan dispersed and entered the Central American country through illegal routes.

Some 300 migrants, mostly Hondurans and Nicaraguans, tried to pass through the border town of Corinto to reach Guatemala, but the authorities prevented them from passing, alleging that they did not meet the immigration requirements, nor did they have the PCR diagnostic test to verify who are not infected with COVID-19.
