Roundup: Berlin appeals against restrictions, regional school closures in Italy

Madrid Desk, Oct 16 (efe-epa).- Authorities in Berlin on Friday appealed against the federal government’s closures of bars and restaurants.

The southern Italian region of Campania has also announced school closures until the end of the month as the country and several others across the continent face record numbers of infections.

Berlin authorities have repealed against early closures of bars and restaurants imposed a week ago by the regional government.

The Administrative Court of Berlin said closing premises from 11pm to 6am is “disproportionate” as a measure against the pandemic.

The closures came into effect on Saturday after the average rate of infection in the capital exceeded 50 per 100,000 inhabitants, the level set across the country to trigger extra measures.

When that weekly rate is exceeded additional rules have to be imposed under an agreement reached this week between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and heads of state governments.

These restrictions also include wearing masks when social distancing cannot be guaranteed and limitations on social gatherings.

Germany registered 7,334 infections in the last 24 others, its highest daily figure since the start of the pandemic.
