Roundup: Record daily Covid infections reported in Central, Eastern Europe

(Update 1: Adds France, alters headline)

Madrid Desk, Sep 11 (EFE).- Health authorities in the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Ukraine all reported record single day numbers of coronavirus infections on Friday, while Portugal registered its highest daily infection toll since the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in April and France decided to cut the mandatory quarantine period from 14 to seven days

The Czech Republic recorded 1,382 new infections over the last 24 hours, the highest since the pandemic started in March.

That figure is 200 cases higher than the previous national high, which was reported on Tuesday.

In response to the upward trend, at least three regions including the capital Prague have been placed on the second of the country’s three-tiered alert system.

This week the government approved the free distribution of masks and respirators for the country’s most vulnerable and elderly.

Hungary also recorded its highest daily toll for new Covid-19 cases, reporting 718 new infections in the past 24 hours.

Despite the concerning trend of rising infections, prime minister Viktor Orban told national radio Kossuth that there are no plans in place to close schools, and in-person teaching will also continue.
