Tiger Woods ends Masters 13 over par, Scheffler takes green jacket

Sports Desk, Apr 10 (EFE).- American golf legend Tiger Woods ended his Masters competition return on Sunday finishing 13 over par, shooting a 301 for the tourney at the Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia.

The 46-year-old, five-time Masters champion – the latest in 2019 – had been out of commission since February 2021 when he was seriously injured in a car crash, almost losing one of his legs.

Last Thursday he started the tourney in Augusta with a good round, shooting 71 (-1), but he did progressively worse in the next two rounds, shooting a 74 (+2) and a 78, and then shooting a 78 again in the final outing. On Sunday, he took only one birdie, but five bogeys and one double bogey for the final result, his worst finish as a pro, tied for 47th.

After the Sunday round, Woods said that he intends to play in the British Open, the fourth “major” tourney of the season to be held at the legendary St. Andrews course in Scotland on July 14-17.

He told Sky Sports that he would not play a full program of tournaments but rather only go for the big championships, adding that he didn’t know if he’ll play at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the PGA Championship on May 19-22.

Woods said he didn’t know what he’d do between now and then.

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler, ranked No. 1 in the world, donned the green jacket on Sunday, his first career major win, shooting a 71 (-1) in the final round and finishing the tourney at 10 under, three strokes in front of runner-up Rory McIlroy.

Scheffler was the only player at Augusta to break par on all four days of the tournament, and although he shot a double bogey on Hole 18 on Sunday, missing a couple of short range putts, he was far enough ahead of McIlroy to maintain his lead.

McIlroy shot a 64 in the final round, tying the Masters final round record, chipping in a shot from the bunker on No. 18 to end the day with a birdie.

In February, Scheffler won the Phoenix Open, along with two other tourneys (Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play) before The Masters.
