Russia marks another record daily Covid-19 deaths

Moscow, Oct 27 (EFE).- Russia Wednesday hit yet another record of daily coronavirus deaths for the ninth day in a row, as the country is in the grip of a surge in infections driven by the highly contagious delta variant.

The national Covid-19 information center reported 1,123 deaths within 24 hours, the highest since the pandemic began, with 36,582 cases across Russia’s 85 regions.

The highest number of coronavirus-induced deaths was registered in Moscow with 91, followed by 74 in Saint Petersburg and 42 in Krasnodar.

Last week, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday ordered workers across the country to stay home for a week in efforts to curb the spread of infections.

He said workers will continue to be paid their wages during the work-free period, from October 30 to November 7, which can be extended in regions where the situation is worse.

Russia overall has seen 233,898 fatalities and 8.4 million infections since the onset of the pandemic, making the Eurasian nation the world’s fifth worst-affected by the virus, according to official figures.

So far, only around a third of Russia’s 145 million population have been fully inoculated, according to official figures.EFE
