UN High Commissioner Bachelet will not seek second term

Geneva, Jun 13 (EFE).- The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, announced Monday that she will not seek a second term in office.

“As my term as High Commissioner draws to a close, this Council’s milestone fiftieth session will be the last which I brief,” she said during a speech before the UN Human Rights Council.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights mandate, created in 1993, is four years and has only been renewed once, by South African Navy Pillay.

The UN Secretary General António Guterres will be in charge of proposing a candidate for the position, which must be approved by the United Nations General Assembly. EFE
