Russia reports daily record Covid deaths for fifth day

Moscow, Jul 3 (EFE).- Russia reported on Saturday 697 deaths related to Covid-19, the highest official toll since the pandemic began for the fifth consecutive day, official data showed.

The government also confirmed 24,439 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the highest figure since early January.

Authorities have blamed the spike on the new Delta variant, which accounts for up to 90% of new infections.

But despite the surge in cases, the government has ruled out another lockdown.

In Moscow, which accounts for most deaths and new infections in the country, the city mayor announced on Thursday a re-vaccination campaign in the capital.

Sergey Sobyanin recommended repeating the vaccine – any of the four Russian-made vaccines – every 6 months.

Since the start of the pandemic, Russia has accounted for 5,585,799 cases and is the fifth worse affected country in the world. EFE
