Philippines tropical storm kills 98; 63 missing

Manila, Oct 31 (EFE).- At least 98 people lost their lives and 63 remain missing due to floods and landslides caused by tropical storm Nalgae, which crossed the Philippines over the weekend, according to a Monday update from officials.

More than half of the deceased are recorded in the autonomous region of Bangsamoro, in the southwest of the country, according to the latest report from the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, which highlights that 58 deaths are confirmed while 40 are pending validation. .

In addition, 69 people were injured by the consequences of Nalgae, known in the Philippines as Paeng, which caused damage to infrastructure estimated at 757 million pesos (13 million dollars or a similar figure in euros).

Nalgae has also forced the evacuation of about 105,000 people, while more than 590,000 families or about 1.9 million people have been affected by the passage of the storm.

The category three tropical storm with maximum winds of 95 kmph made landfall Saturday and left the territory Sunday afternoon, before heading to the South China Sea on its way to the island.

Nalgae made landfall just over a month after Typhoon Noru passed through the Philippines, which in September caused at least 12 deaths and about 14,000 evacuees.

About 20 typhoons hit the Philippines every year, as it is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to the effects of climate change. EFE
