‘Football Leaks’ founder tried in France for spying on PSG

Paris, Nov 22 (EFE).- Portuguese activist Rui Pinto, who exposed various scandals in football through his so-called “Football Leaks,” was tried in Paris for espionage on Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Pinto, 35, is accused of fraudulently accessing the emails of the club’s financial director, the deputy general director, and an assistant manager between 2015 and 2019 from various servers in France, Portugal, and Hungary.

Unauthorized access allowed him to extract and download several files that were later published.

Information contained in these files allowed the French justice system to open an investigation into racism, considering that PSG included ethnic criteria in the evaluation of trainees at its youth academy.

The case was initially closed in August last year but could be reopened following the presentation of other allegations.

Data obtained by Pinto was published by an international media consortium and brought to light the dubious practices of some stars aimed at evading taxes.

Pinto appeared as a defendant and a protected witness in the case, in which his lawyers highlighted the need to protect whistleblowers who bring fraud and crimes to light. EFE
