6 killed after fire breaks out at Spanish care home

Valencia, Spain, Jan 19 (EFE).- At least six people have been killed in a fire that broke out at an older people’s care home near the eastern Spanish city of Valencia, emergency services told Efe Wednesday.

The blaze ignited late Tuesday in a first floor bedroom at the care home in Moncada, a town to the north of Valencia. The two residents staying in the room were killed by the fire.

Three others died soon after the flames began to spread, and another 15 were hospitalized. One person died in hospital overnight. Those killed were aged between 67 to 95, emergency services said.

Firefighters and other emergency services worked to evacuate residents and workers from the center. Police said there were a total of 81 people at the care home at the time of the blaze.

Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez on Twitter shared his condolences with the relatives of the deceased, describing the incident as “tragic.” EFE
