Russian attacks intensify in Donetsk, Zelenskyy demands more aid

Lviv/Moscow, Ukraine, Aug 7 (EFE).- Russian attacks intensified Sunday in the eastern region of Donetsk, prompting Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to call for more weapons.

In a video address, Zelenskyy thanked the West for the assistance it has already given Ukraine, which he said had led to important achievements in the defense of Donetsk and the destruction of Russian military logistics.

“Every attack on an enemy ammunition depot, its command posts and logistics saves lives, lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians,” he said.

According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, attacks on the localities of Sloviansk, Bakhmut and Advidka were successfully repelled.

Bakhmut, the Donbas region’s last heavily populated area and where heavy fighting has been ongoing for several days, is a key point of the Ukrainian defense strategy.

Meanwhile, in Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, Russian forces destroyed an arsenal with 45,000 tons of ammunition provided by the Nato member states to Ukraine, the Russian defense ministry said.

“The arsenal was destroyed in the Voznesensk region of the Mykolaiv region, where 45,000 tons of ammunition recently supplied to the armed forces of Ukraine by Nato countries were stored,” Igor Konashenkov, the spokesman for the defense ministry, said.

Attacks by the Russian air forces have left 300 casualties in the ranks of the Ukrainian forces, according to Konashenkov.

“Up to 130 soldiers and eight vehicles and armors were wiped out as a result of an attack by the Russian Aerospace Force against a temporary location of units of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade in an agricultural enterprise in the city of Bakhmut, ” Konashenkov said.

Another 70 soldiers were killed after targeting the Assault Brigade of the Ukrainian Army in the town of Toretsk, Konashenkov reported.

In the eastern region of Kharkiv, Russian forces killed more than 100 troops of the Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine in the territory of a thermoelectric power plant.

“Due to heavy losses, the regime of Zelenskyy is taking measures to reinforce troops in Donbas,” the Russian official stressed. EFE
