The University of Memphis offers different experiences abroad, one of them is in Costa Rica. There are around 20 students that attend this program, as it is one of the most popular programs we have at UofM. How does the Study Abroad work? Students must have taken at least one semester of Spanish and have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to be eligible for the program.

Courses are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. However, Lindsay Aston, Spanish instructor at UofM, says that “Students do not need a strong background in the Spanish language to attend this program since elementary courses are offered.” The idea is to practice the language while being immersed in the culture. “It is a wonderful experience!”, according to Aston.

So, how is it to be in Costa Rica? Aston told us about her experience taking students with her. She says that during the week they stayed in San José near the university; however, on the three-day weekends, students traveled all over. “I took a group to Manuel Antonio National Park one weekend. There were monkeys, sloths, parrots, iguanas, and so much more! The beaches were amazing as well with surfing, parasailing, and other water activities.”

Aston also told us that UofM “works in collaboration with MLSA and the Universidad de Costa Rica. Students take classes at the Universidad de Costa Rica with professors from the university there. There are also coordinators from MLSA (that speak both English and Spanish) available to help students throughout the program – housing, traveling, etc.”

What kind of activities do the students do over there? Aston says that the schedule is pretty busy but fun, since “classes take place from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday, with afternoons free. MLSA has excursions to the Museo Nacional, el Teatro Nacional, and Café Brit (a coffee plantation, tour, and tasting). On campus, there are also many activities for students. There are salsa lessons, soccer matches, concerts, and more!”. According to the Spanish instructor, the students “really break out of their shells when they study abroad. They learn so much more by experiencing the culture firsthand and speaking Spanish daily with professors, friends, and their home-stay family.”

Finally, Aston recommends this experience because “traveling and studying abroad is one of the most amazing experiences anyone could have. You gain independence, self-reliance, and learn to adapt to new situations and environments.”
