Russian corvettes arrive in Shanghai for joint military drills with China

Beijing, July 6 (EFE).- Russian corvettes Gromky and Sovershennyy have arrived in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai for a seven-day visit ahead of joint naval drills with Chinese warships, official media reported Thursday.

During their stay in the megalopolis, the Russian corvettes will carry out “professional and technical exchanges” and “mutual visits to ships” with Chinese forces.

The two naval crews will also play friendly basketball matches.

After the visit, the Russian ships will participate in joint exercises with Chinese naval forces that will focus on combat formations, telecommunications, and search and rescue operations.

Russia and China agreed in March to strengthen their military cooperation to enhance mutual trust between their armed forces, the two countries said in a joint statement after a meeting in the Kremlin between Russian and Chinese presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

They said the two countries would regularly carry joint patrols at sea and in the airspace and engage in joint exercises within the framework of existing bilateral mechanisms.

At the end of June, the Taiwanese defense ministry said it detected two corvettes from the Russian navy sailing near its territorial waters.

However, the Taiwanese ministry did not provide details about how close the Russian ships were to the coast or their specific identification. EFE
