Russian oil proves sticky subject in EU sanction talks

Brussels, May 8 (EFE).- European Union member states have failed to come to an agreement on banning Russian oil following a meeting of representatives Sunday.

The EU is currently adding the final touches to a sixth package of sanctions against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine, but the move is being held up by a lack of consensus on oil supply.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, has proposed a phased-in total ban on Russian oil in the EU.

Countries like Hungary and Slovakia, both heavily dependent on Russian crude oil, would be given an extra year to implement the measure.EFE
