Russian strike kills newborn in Ukraine as child death toll creeps up

Lviv, Ukraine, Nov 23 (EFE).- Russia has killed at least 438 children since it began its invasion of Ukraine in February, including a newborn baby who was killed in a strike on a Zaporizhizhia hospital overnight, Ukraine’s prosecutor general said Wednesday.

“As of the morning of November 23, 2022, more than 1,279 children were affected in Ukraine as a result of the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation. According to the official information of the juvenile prosecutors, 438 children were killed and more than 841 were injured,” the office said in a Telegram statement, as cited in English by Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.

The office said that it was working to establish more accurate figures from active combat zones in the conflict, adding that it was unable to verify casualty numbers from areas under the occupation of Russian and Russian-allied forces.

The figures offered by Ukrainian prosecutors coincided with reports that Russian strikes on a hospital in Vilniansk, in the Zaporizhizhia region of southern Ukraine, killed a newborn baby early Wednesday.

Oleksandr Starukh, head of the regional administration in Zaporizhizhia, said the Russian strike on the maternity ward occurred overnight. EFE
