Honda, Mazda cut production due to semiconductor shortage

Tokyo, Jan 30 (efe-epa).- Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda Motor Company is to temporarily suspend production of one of its plants in the country due to the shortage of semiconductors, which has also forced its competitor Mazda Motor Corporation to take similar measures.

Honda announced Saturday the closure for five days from the beginning of February of its plant in Mie prefecture, in the west of the country, where two of its best-selling minivehicle models are produced in the domestic market.

The decision comes due to difficulties in sourcing semiconductors used in vehicle electronics systems due to the global shortage of these components caused by strong and sudden changes in demand in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Honda Motor had already decided to reduce the production of other of its domestic plants throughout January, as well as those it has in Canada and the United States, although it has not yet provided data on the impact of these measures on the volume of its production.

Also amidst global semiconductor shortages, Mazda plans to cut production from its facilities in Japan and abroad, according to state broadcaster NHK. EFE-EPA
