Sanchez pledges Spain’s support to UN to reach peace in Ukraine

Madrid, May 8 (EFE).- Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday pledged his country’s full support to United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres for the UN’s efforts to achieve peace in war-torn Ukraine.

Sanchez met with Guterres at Moncloa palace in Madrid, where the UN chief will receive the Carlos V European Award from the Spanish King Felipe VI later on Monday.

“Today I have shown our support to Antonio Guterres for the UN to end Russian aggression in Ukraine, achieve a just and lasting peace and end food insecurity,” the Spanish PM wrote on Twitter.

In addition, Sanchez reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the next Sustainable Development Summit, scheduled for September, when Spain will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Guterres will attend a dinner hosted by Felipe VI, to which Portugal’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and prime minister Antonio Costa, as well as Spanish foreign minister Jose Manuel Albares, are also invited.

The leaders are expected to attend the award ceremony at Monastery of Yuste on Tuesday to mark Europe Day.EFE
