Israeli security man kills Palestinian after alleged stabbing attempt

Jerusalem, May 26 (EFE).- An Israeli security guard Friday shot dead a knife-wielding Palestinian who allegedly tried to stab a settler near a synagogue entrance in the occupied West Bank.

No Israeli residents or troopers of the settlement suffered injuries in the incident that took place in the Teneh Omarim settlement, south of the Palestinian city of Hebron.

No Israeli was injured, while a military spokesman confirmed to EFE the death of the Palestinian.

“An alert (was) activated regarding a terrorist infiltration into Teneh Omarim. The terrorist attempted to stab a civilian and was neutralized,” the Israel Defense Forces tweeted.

The military said IDF soldiers were scanning the area and residents were instructed to remain indoors.

The incident coincides with the celebration in Israel of the Shavuot holiday to commemorate the revelation of the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai.

Violence has been escalating in the region that has seen the bloodiest start to the year since the Second Intifada.

So far this year, the conflict has claimed the lives of 120 Palestinians, both militants, and civilians, including 20 minors.

Nineteen Israelis, three of them minors, have died in Palestinian attacks.

Some 34 Palestinian were killed in the Gaza Strip during the recent escalation of the war between Israel and the militants of the enclave.

Two also died in Israeli territory. EFE
