Scholz vows to support Ukraine despite shortage of military stocks

Berlin, Apr 19 (EFE).- Germany will support Ukraine financially and militarily even though it has nearly run out of its own military stocks, chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday.

“The aim is to strengthen the Ukrainian military such that it can push back the Russian attack,” Scholz told a news conference following a meeting with Western allies.

Germany has nearly reached its maximum capacity of weapons it can deliver but will instead work with the armaments industry to help Ukraine, he added.

“We will provide the necessary money for the purchase,” Scholz said.

The social democrat is receiving pressure from both the conservative opposition and his own coalition partners, the Greens and Liberals, to supply Ukraine with more weapons.

Kyiv has also criticized Germany for not taking a strong enough stance against Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, mainly due to the country’s dependence on Russian energy. EFE
