EU condemns spate of letter bombs in Spain
Brussels/Madrid, Dec 1 (EFE).- The European Commission on Thursday condemned a series of letter bombs that have been mailed to various ministries and embassies in Spain as “very serious incidents.”
The warning from Brussels came after letter bombs were sent to the Spanish defense ministry, the United States’ embassy in Madrid and the EU Satellite Center in Torrejon de Ardoz on Thursday, one day after an explosive package injured an employee when it detonated at the Ukrainian embassy in the Spanish capital.
That incident prompted police to cordon off the area and activate anti-terrorist protocols.
In remarks to Spanish public television, EC spokesman Peter Stano said Brussels was in contact with Madrid as investigations were ongoing to ascertain whether the letter bombs are separate or organized incidents.
Spanish defense minister Margarita Robles, currently on a visit to Ukraine, said the explosive envelopes would not change the government’s commitment to Ukraine.
“The investigation is ongoing. It must be made clear that no letter or violent action is going to change the clear and firm commitment of Spain, Nato and the EU when it comes to supporting Ukraine,” Robles said in a joint press conference with her Ukrainian counterpart, Oleksii Reznikov.
Spanish arms firm Instalaza in Zaragoza also discovered a suspicious package on Wednesday, while another letter laced with pyrotechnic material and addressed to prime minister Pedro Sanchez was intercepted on November 24. EFE
