Arsenal go 5 points clear of Manchester City atop Premier League

Sports Desk, Nov 12 (EFE).- Martin Odegaard accounted for all the goals as Arsenal dominated last-place Wolverhampton 2-0 Saturday to improve to 37 points, 5 better than defending Premier League champions Manchester City heading into the six-week-long break for the World Cup.

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur both won to remain third and fourth, respectively, while Liverpool moved up to fifth with a victory over second-from-bottom Southampton.

The day’s action began at the Etihad, where City welcomed Brentford with expectations of narrowing the gap to Arsenal. But the Bees had other ideas.

Conceding 75 percent possession to the hosts, Brentford remained sound at the back and alert to openings and they didn’t have to wait long.

Goalkeeper David Raya sent a free kick deep into City territory, where the ball founds its way to Ivan Toney, who made it 1-0 for Brentford in the 16th minute.

Phil Foden scored off a corner just before the break to send the sides to the dressing rooms knotted at 1-1 and they remained deadlocked heading into a whopping 10 minutes of stoppage time.

After denying Toney in the 91st, Ederson watched the striker redirect the ball into the net from close range in the 98th minute to give Brentford its first victory against any team in the city of Manchester since 1937.

The brace, coming just days after England coach left him off the roster for the World Cup, brought Toney’s goal total to 10, trailing only Spurs’ Harry Kane and City scoring machine Erling Haaland.

Brentford climbed to 10th in the table with 19 points.

Southampton traveled to Liverpool for their first game under new coach Nathan Jones, who has his work cut out extricating the Saints from the drop zone.

Roberto Firmino put the hosts up in the 6th minute with a no-look header, but Che Adams equalized for Southampton three minutes later.

The Reds reclaimed the lead in the 21st minute on the first of two goals by Uruguay international Darwin Nuñez, who went on to make it 3-1 in the 42nd. Alisson saved a shot by Adams in the 77th minute that could have made the final stretch uncomfortable for Liverpool.

The result leaves the Reds on 22 points, just 1 more than seventh-place Brighton & Hove Albion, who will be home Sunday to Aston Villa.

Joe Willock’s goal in the 67th minute proved to be all surging Newcastle would need to defeat Chelsea 1-0. The Magpies fifth straight Premier League victory extended the Blues’ winless streak in all competitions to five.

Chelsea slip to eighth in the table and Newcastle hang onto to third spot with 30 points, a point ahead of Spurs, who came from behind twice to nip Leeds United 4-3.

Leeds went ahead in the 10th minute with a goal by emerging talent Crysencio Summerville, only to see Kane reply for Tottenham in the 25th.

The Whites led 2-1 at the break thanks to a goal by Rodrigo Moreno. Ben Davies equalized for Spurs early in the second half.

But Moreno got a second in the 76th minute to give Leeds a 3-2 advantage before Rodrigo Bentancur scored twice in three minutes to nail down all 3 points for Tottenham.
