MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — El 16 de agosto de 1977 el mundo lloró la pérdida de uno de los máximos exponentes de la música americana, Elvis Presley. Hoy día, su legado sigue estando muy presente, por lo que Graceland se prepara para recibir a miles de fans -que vienen de todas partes del mundo- con el fin de conmemorar el 42o aniversario de la muerte del Rey del Rock and Roll.
El magno evento, conocido como “La Semana de Elvis”, se estará llevando a cabo del 9 al 17 de agosto en todas las instalaciones de Graceland (la Mansión de Graceland, Elvis Presley’s Memphis, el hotel The Guest House at Graceland y el nuevo Centro de Exhibiciones de Graceland).
El público podrá disfrutar de entretenimiento en vivo, subastas, charlas, fiestas y mucho más. La “Competencia de Artistas Homenaje a Elvis” (“The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest”) y la “Vigilia con Velas” (The Candlelight Vigil), así como el maratón anual “Elvis Presley 5K Run”, son también parte fundamental de la “Semana de Elvis”.
Además de esto, este año se cumple el quincuagésimo (50o) aniversario de las legendarias sesiones de grabación de Elvis en American Sound que produjeron canciones como “Suspicious Minds”, “In the Ghetto” y “Don’t Cry Daddy”. Por este motivo, se estarán realizando charlas con panelistas invitados como Bobby Wood y Gene Chrisman, quienes fueron miembros de la legendaria banda de American Sound entre 1967 y 1972; Mary y Ginger Holladay, que formaron parte del coro de la banda; el historiador de Elvis en Sony Music, Ernst Jorgensen; el compositor Mark James, quien escribió “Suspicious Minds”; y los músicos BJ Thomas y Ronnie Milsap, ambos ganadores de varios premios GRAMMY. Un concierto en celebración del 50o aniversario de American Sound también tendrá lugar el 14 de agosto en el Soundstage at Graceland.
Por si fuera poco, “La Semana de Elvis 2019” se destacará por la presentación de un gran concierto que estará celebrando los 50 años del regreso de Elvis a Las Vegas (1969). Dicho concierto en vivo será el 16 de agosto y contará con la imagen de Elvis en una pantalla gigante.
En cuanto a la “Vigilia con Velas”, el acontecimiento más importante de todos durante la “Semana de Elvis”, ésta será el jueves, 15 de agosto, a partir de las 8:30 PM en la puerta de entrada de Graceland. La música de Elvis marcará el tono de la noche y los aficionados podrán caminar por el Jardín de la Meditación para conmemorar a su artista inolvidable hasta la madrugada del siguiente día. Este evento es completamente gratis.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — On August 16, 1977, the world mourned the loss of one of the greatest exponents of American music, Elvis Presley. Today, his legacy is still very present, which is why Graceland is getting ready to welcome thousands of fans – who come from all over the world – in order to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the death of the King of Rock and Roll.
The grand event, known as “Elvis Week,” will be taking place from August 9 to August 17 at all Graceland facilities (The Graceland Mansion, Elvis Presley’s Memphis, The Guest House at Graceland, and the new Graceland Exhibition Center). It will feature live entertainment, conversations on Elvis, parties, movies, and excursions to Tupelo, MS, including The Auction at Graceland and The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. The famous Candlelight Vigil and the annual Elvis Presley 5K Run are also a fundamental piece of “Elvis Week.”
Furthermore, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Elvis’ legendary recording sessions at American Sound that produced songs such as “Suspicious Minds,” “In the Ghetto,” and “Don’t Cry Daddy.” For this reason, there will be an American Sound Studio Panel to discuss the sessions in 1969. Among the panelists are Bobby Wood and Gene Chrisman, who were members of the legendary house band at the American Sound between 1967 and 1972; Mary and Ginger Holladay, who sang back-up vocals; Elvis historian Sony Music’s Ernst Jorgensen; songwriter Mark James, who wrote “Suspicious Minds;” and musicians BJ Thomas and Ronnie Milsap, both winners of several GRAMMY awards. A concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of American Sound will also be held on August 14 at the Soundstage at Graceland.
As if that were not enough, “Elvis Week 2019” will stand out this year with the presentation of a major concert that will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Elvis’s return to Las Vegas (1969). This live concert (with Elvis on the big screen) is on August 16.
Regarding the Candlelight Vigil, the most important event during “Elvis Week,” it will start with the traditional opening ceremony on Thursday, August 15, at 8:30 PM at Graceland’s front gate, and will end at dawn the next day. This free event lasts all night and allows people to walk up the driveway to Elvis’ gravesite and back down carrying a candle in quiet remembrance.
