Spain to donate 15 million Covid-19 vaccine doses to Latin America

Madrid, Jun 2 (EFE).- Spain will donate 15 million Covid-19 vaccine doses to Latin America, Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sanchez said Wednesday.

The donation is part of the international solidarity mechanism Covax, through which 22.5 million doses have already reached the region.

Spain will distribute the vaccines through the World Health Organization, Sanchez announced through a recorded video at the virtual summit of the Gavi Covax AMC initiative, which is aimed at raising funds to distribute 1.8 billion doses to developing countries.

Sanchez recalled Spain’s commitment in the fight against the pandemic and facilitation of vaccination, referring to the Spanish co-leadership in the ACT-Accelerator initiative.

This is an international cooperation tool that has made it possible to accelerate the development, production and equitable access to Covid-19 tests, treatments and vaccines.

After insisting that no one will be safe from the pandemic until everyone is, Sanchez recalled Spain’s commitment not only to lifting vaccine patents, but also to expanding production and improving distribution.

Spain has earmarked 7.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines for Latin America as of July, when Sanchez expects half of the Spanish population to be fully vaccinated. EFE
