Charge Dismissed Against Man Accused of Threatening County Commissioner Tami Sawyer

MEMPHIS, TN (WREG) — The charge against the man accused of threatening Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer was reportedly dismissed Thursday morning.

George Johnson was facing a misdemeanor assault charge after he was seen on camera yelling profanities at Sawyer while waving a confederate flag in June of 2021.

Johnson was part of the crew moving Nathan Bedford Forrest’s remains and dismantling a pedestal that had supported a statute of Forrest before it was removed in 2017.

Speaking with WREG before his arrest, Johnson initially labelled the warrant for his arrest “fake news” and did not apologize for his actions.

“I have no apologies whatsoever for what I did because this is my heritage,” Johnson said.

Court records state the case was dismissed on the grounds of “no probable cause.”

Sawyer reacted to the dismissal Thursday. She said while the judge found Johnson’s actions “pathetic”, he could not identify “a reasonable level of fear” on her part.

“It is absolutely reasonable that I, as a Black woman, would have felt fear from a white supremacist threatening me and singing Dixie,” Sawyer said.

Sawyer also said the dismissal is an example of why representation matters.

“If this is the system we have to operate in, we must ensure that the people who get to assess what is reasonable represent us all,” Sawyer said.

George Johnson enfrentaba un cargo de agresión menor después de que lo vieran en cámara gritando blasfemias a Sawyer mientras ondeaba una bandera confederada en junio de 2021.

Johnson formó parte del equipo que movió los restos de Nathan Bedford Forrest y desmanteló un pedestal que había sostenido un estatuto de Forrest antes de que fuera retirado en 2017.

Hablando con el noticiario WREG antes de su arresto, Johnson inicialmente calificó la orden de arresto como “noticias falsas” y no se disculpó por sus acciones.

“No me disculpo en absoluto por lo que hice porque esta es mi herencia”, dijo Johnson.

Sawyer reaccionó al despido el jueves. Ella dijo que, si bien el juez encontró las acciones de Johnson “patéticas”, no pudo identificar “un nivel razonable de miedo” de su parte.

“Es absolutamente razonable que yo, como mujer afroamericana, hubiera sentido miedo de un supremacista blanco amenazándome y cantando Dixie”, dijo Sawyer.

Sawyer también dijo que es un ejemplo de que el cargo fuera desestimado es un ejemplo de por qué importa la representación.

“Si este es el sistema en el que tenemos que operar, debemos asegurarnos de que las personas que pueden evaluar lo que es razonable nos representen a todos”, dijo Sawyer.
