Real Betis top Getafe 1-0 on late penalty

Seville, Spain, Feb 19 (efe-epa).- Borja Iglesias converted a penalty with six minutes left in regulation here Friday to give Real Betis a 1-0 victory over foundering Getafe.

Betis improve to 36 points, enough to vault ahead of Villarreal into sixth place in LaLiga, while Getafe – winless in their last six matches and without a goal in five – are 14th on 24 points, just 3 above the drop zone.

The hosts had 65 percent possession and put five shots on target to just one for Getafe, who had goalkeeper David Soria to thank for keeping them in the contest for most of the night.

Getafe nearly went behind in the opening minutes as a result of a defensive blunder by Erick Cabaco. Loren Moron got around Soria but failed to connect from a bad angle.

The visitors regained their composure and the sides ended the first half 0-0.

Betis grew sharper on the attack after Iglesias and Joaquin Sanchez came on as subs in the 63rd minute, while Mauro Arrambarri missed the mark in the 72nd minute on Getafe’s most promising opportunity of the match.

Four minutes later, Sofian Chakla fouled Iglesias in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, but Soria stopped Sergio Canales.

When another Chakla encounter with Iglesias led to a second penalty in the 83rd minute, Borja took the kick and converted. EFE
