Shelby County Mayor’s Office Presents Financial Aid to “Refugee Program”
La alcaldía del Condado de Shelby presenta ayuda financiera a “Programa de Refugiados”

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — El alcalde del Condado de Shelby, Lee Harris, junto con las comisionadas Henri E. Brooks y Erika Sugarmon, otorgó el jueves, 18 de mayo, una subvención para el “Programa de Empoderamiento para Refugiados” (REP, por sus siglas en inglés), el cual ofrece programación extracurricular, tutoría y el transporte necesario para más de 120 hijos de refugiados e inmigrantes en Memphis.
Con fondos por $50.000, un autobús y un espacio para diversas actividades comunitarias, el programa tiene su base en el Centro Comunitario The Commons at Merton, donde también hay un salón de clases para inmigrantes y refugiados.
Ya finalizada la controvertida política fronteriza de la era de la pandemia, conocida como Título 42, el gobierno federal espera una afluencia de inmigrantes que crucen la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, por lo que esto llega en un momento de mayor inestabilidad y conflicto en países como Sudán, Ucrania, Cuba y Venezuela.
Esta subvención del gobierno del Condado de Shelby es parte de su compromiso continuo de apoyar a las organizaciones locales que ayudan a que el condado de Shelby sea un lugar más acogedor e inclusivo para quienes huyen de su país de origen en busca de una vida mejor. Los fondos han permitido que REP atienda a cientos de estudiantes y brinde transporte gratuito hacia y desde el programa extracurricular para estudiantes de primaria, secundaria y preparatoria (bachillerato).
En los últimos años, la administración de Harris se ha esforzado por ayudar a las familias de refugiados a reubicarse y recibir el apoyo que necesitan al comenzar una nueva vida en el condado de Shelby.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, along with Commissioners Henri E. Brooks and Erika Sugarmon, presented on Thursday, May 18, a grant to the “Refugee Empowerment Program” (REP), which provides after-school programming, tutoring, and necessary transportation for more than 120 children of refugees and immigrants in Memphis.
With a grant of $50,000, a bus, and space for various community activities, the program takes place at The Commons at Merton Community Center, where there is a classroom for immigrants and refugees as well.
With the controversial pandemic-era border policy, known as Title 42, now over, the federal government expects an influx of immigrants crossing the US-Mexico border, so this comes at a time of heightened instability and conflict in countries like Sudan, Ukraine, Cuba, and Venezuela.
This grant from the Shelby County Government is part of its ongoing commitment to support local organizations that help make Shelby County a more welcoming and inclusive place for those fleeing their home country for a better life. The funds have allowed REP to serve hundreds of students and provide free transportation to and from the after-school program for elementary, middle, and high school students.
Over the past several years, the Harris Administration has made efforts to help refugee families resettle and receive the support they need as they begin new lives in Shelby County.
