Shooting at Mexico City airport leaves police officer wounded

Mexico City, Sept 12 (EFE).- An attempted robbery of cargo trucks in the customs area of Mexico City’s international airport led to a shooting in which a police officer was injured and a suspected thief was detained, authorities said Tuesday.

“A few minutes ago, Mexico City police personnel pursuing suspected criminals had a confrontation near Carlos Leon Avenue, resulting in an injured police officer and a detainee,” Mexico City International Airport said in a post on social networking site X (formerly Twitter).

It added that “no passengers or visitors were in danger”.

The chief of police of the Mexican capital, Pablo Vázquez, said on the same social network that a man linked to the theft of trucks in the customs area “fired shots at the police and as a result a colleague was injured with gunshot wounds.”

According to posts on social networks, the shooting caused panic in Terminal 1, where national and international flights arrive and depart.

The events come just days after Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that Mexico would regain Category 1 aviation safety status from the US Federal Aviation Administration, two years after losing it. EFE
