Shootout at Indian court leaves 3 dead, including notorious gangster

New Delhi, Sep 24 (EFE).- At least three people died Friday, including a well-known gangster, in a shooting inside a court in New Delhi courts, police officials told EFE.

“Three people have died, all of them criminals,” said a senior officer in charge of Delhi Police’s special cell involved in investigating terrorism and organized crime under the condition of anonymity.

He said the incident took place around 1.30 pm in Rohini court in which the infamous criminal Jitender Gogi, under arrest since March, was killed while present for a hearing.

The NDTV news broadcaster aired footage from inside the court, in which members of the police could be seen rushing towards a courtroom while several people ran in the opposite direction.

According to police sources cited by NDTV, two assailants from a rival gang entered the court dressed as lawyers and opened fire on Gogi. Members of the security forces subsequently killed the two attackers.

Gogi was arrested in March along with three of his accomplices in a police operation in Gurgaon, a city on the outskirts of the Indian capital, for runing an extortion racket.

For many years, Gogi has had a violent rivalry with another local gangster known as Tillu, according to the Indian Express newspaper.

Although Tillu has also been in prison since 2015, clashes between the two gangs have claimed the lives of at least 10 people over the last six years. EFE
