Shootout during police raid leaves 11 dead in Rio favela

Rio de Janeiro, May 24 (EFE).- At least 11 people were killed in a shootout during a police raid in a northern Rio de Janeiro favela early Tuesday, authorities said.

Military police said 10 of the dead were suspected gang members while the 11th was a female resident of the neighborhood.

Another two people were hospitalized following the police raid.

Police said the operation, which began at 4am, sought to arrest senior members of the Comando Vermelho criminal group hiding out in the sprawling Penha favela.

The shootout on Tuesday comes almost exactly a year after a similar police operation left 28 dead in the Jacarezinho favela, the deadliest ever recorded in Rio. EFE
